Sodium meta bisulphite

Sodium meta bisulphite

Chemcial Formula : Na2S2O5

Physical Properties : Sodium metabisulphite is a white to slightly yellowish solid ,or crystalline powder. It is an inorganic compound with faint odour of sulphur dioxide . It is free flowing . It decomposes at its melting point (150C). It is freely soluble in water . Its ph value is 3.5-5.

Uses : Some of the major applications of sodium meta bisulphite is in starch and food industry . It is used as food additive, mainly as a preservative. It may also cause allergic reaction as an additive . Dilute quashes and candies also contain it in minute concentration . It finds its place in purifying or isolating aldehydes and ketones . It is used in the manufacture of sulphonated oil and resin . It provides a source of sulphur dioxide , a reducing agent when mixed with water . It helps in removing chloramine from water too . It can be used as an antiseptic rinse to sterilize equipment . It is used as an oxygen scavinger to remove the dissolved oxygen from waste water . It is also added to wine to resist the growth of bacteria as well as to slow down its oxidation . It also act as an antichlor in chemical industry and as a redox catalyst in acrylic fiber industry.
